Command & Conquer 4:Tiberian Twilight

Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight is a real-time tactics video game and the latest installment of the popular Command & Conquer franchise, released March 16, 2010. It constitutes the final chapter in the Kane sagaCommand & Conquer 4 is the first game in the series to implement a form of DRM that requires constant Internet access; this type of restrictive DRM is fairly new and targets the used games market as well as ensuring that households must buy a copy per person. The game was released for digital download via online gaming distribution service, Steam on March 19 2010 and did not require constant access to the Internet to run. Command & Conquer 4 also utilizes EA's own servers for online play, rather than GameSpy Servers which EA has relied on for previous Command & Conquergames. A closed beta of the game was officially released by EA to contest winners on November 21, 2009.The gameplay in Command & Conquer 4 no longer follows the same resource-gathering dynamic as previous games in the series. In the main game mode, the player must capture control nodes scattered across a map, and retain more nodes than the enemy player, gaining enough points over time to win the match.Command & Conquer 4 utilizes class-based gameplay as well as some RPG elements.
There are two playable factions: the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) and the Brotherhood of Nod. The storyline begins with the world being consumed by the rampant growth of Tiberium, which is threatening to render the earth uninhabitable. Each faction is split into three upgradeable classes: offense, defense and support, each with their own specialized focus. The classes consist mostly of their own unique units, with the only shared unit among classes being the engineer. The offense class is focused on tank-based, front-line combat, relying less on any kind of fortified emplacements or bases. The defense class is focused on infantry-based combat as well as utilization of rudimentary base defenses, and are also the only class to have access to superweapons. It is the only class that allows the player to construct buildings in order to develop their base (analogous with the previous games). The support class is focused on air-combat and specialized vehicles to traverse the environment, and is also equipped with special support powers that are used to assist teammates. As it relies on air support, the support MCVs of both factions are able to lift off in the air. Command & Conquer 4 contains two non-playable factions from previous games in the Tiberium Universe: The Scrin (C&C3) and the Forgotten (Tiberian Sun), the latter of which returning as a minor part of the story as well as a neutral class on the map. Command & Conquer 4 includes a total of about 90 units, including many new units and updated versions of previous Command & Conquer units.
The prologue takes place in the year 2062, 15 years after the events of Tiberium Wars (which led to the invasion and defeat of the Scrin), and 10 years after the final events of Kane's Wrath (where the prophet regained possession of the Tacitus). During this time period, Tiberium has evolved and is spreading at such a rate that the whole planet is expected to become uninhabitable by 2068. Humanity is on the brink of extinction

Men of War: Vietnam

Men of War: Vietnam is a new game for the critically acclaimed series. The new, story-driven campaign lets you taste the explosive mix of the jungle, Hueys and rock-n-roll in 1968. The US campaign focuses on a team of elite special ops soldiers, and each one of them has a personality.

The unit includes Sergeant John Merrill, machine-gunner Jim Walsh, sniper Sonny Armstrong, grenade launcher operator Carl Dillan and combat engineer Bill Kirby. In some missions they can count only on themselves, while in the others they act together with regular US and South-Vietnamese troops. The North Vietnam campaign tells the story of two Soviet military consultants and two soldiers of the North Vietnam Army who are the only survivors of an ambush prepared by the US troops. The task of getting back to the North Vietnam territory is a difficult one – they have no means of radio communication, no wheeled vehicles, and it’s too far to make it there on foot. On their way these survivors get involved in a chain of bloodbath engagements and find themselves in the dead center of the well-known Tet offensive.

Missions range from special operations (rescuing a shot-down pilot, escorting a reporter, etc.) to full scale battles.

Operation Flashpoint : Red River

The challenge of creating a truly realistic battlefield is rarely attempted in video games, but Operation Flashpoint: Red River takes it on and comes very close to succeeding. Unfortunately, the intensity of its highly tactical warzone is often broken by AI issues, poor checkpointing, and the need for a trial-and-error approach in some areas. Red River includes a well-presented and methodically paced campaign as well as some enjoyable cooperative multiplayer modes, but a long list of design and technical problems ultimately prevent this competent first-person shooter from being a great one.

In the campaign you play as the leader of Fireteam Bravo, a four-man team that is part of a larger marine squad sent into Tajikistan to chase down insurgents who have fled the conflict in Afghanistan. What starts out as a small operation quickly escalates as China's People's Liberation Army forces move into the country to wipe out insurgents who have been attacking the Chinese border. The story is well-presented with great looking cut-scenes that mix footage from the game with video from the real-world conflict in Afghanistan. However, the plot is a little lacking in originality. To control your team amid the increasing chaos of the Tajik battlefield, you can issue a variety of specific orders to your brothers in arms. These start with simple commands such as "follow me" or "hold position" and then progress to orders such as assaulting buildings, suppressing targets, and calling in airstrikes or artillery. The key to success in the single-player game is to make sure your team is always in a position to respond quickly to new situations.

However, despite your best efforts, your AI squadmates show very little awareness of what is going on around them, and don't have much sense of self-preservation. They often wander off on their own even if told to hold position, for example, and when complying with the "follow" command, they walk into your crossfire with alarming regularity. During particularly intense firefights, you sometimes spend as much time healing your teammates as you do shooting at the enemy. Friendly AI shows little desire to stay behind cover, and one hit is enough to incapacitate them. Healing your friends takes quite some time too, because there is one process to stop bleeding and another to heal wounds. Healing your team often leaves you exposed to the enemy, risking a quick death that forces you to start the firefight all over again. The careless AI dampens the realism of the battles and often forces you to repeat sections multiple times. This is made even worse by a checkpoint system that regularly forces you to replay overly long sections when you're killed.

While these moments of the campaign are supremely frustrating, there are others that offer great satisfaction. Performing the perfect flanking maneuver is almost an art form and is a great way to surprise the enemy. This element of surprise is often the key to succeeding in Red River's lengthy and difficult missions, because your enemies are deadly accurate even from several hundred yards away. Make your approach too obvious, and you might quickly find yourself in a bottleneck with enemy forces bearing down from all sides. Most battles take place at a range of around 100 to 150 yards, but if your enemies see a chance to get up close and personal, they will take it. If you let them get too close, the fight will be over very quickly, because they use similar tactics to your own, attempting to suppress and flank your position. The realistic, tactical ebb and flow to the battles is one of Red River's biggest strengths.
